Juneteenth is Thursday, June 19th.
Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated to commemorate the final emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. This date is the bookend of Emancipation Day, April 16, 1862 when Abraham Lincoln set free all enslaved people in the US by law. While emancipation began on Emancipation Day it took three long years and 280,000 Union soldiers deaths to end the war for the final emancipation in Texas. For the last few years we have celebrated Juneteenth by honoring and caring for the sacred cemetery where many black Georgians are buried (see 3rd Annual Juneteenth Service Project below).
